Northern Quarter Stories created, curated and produced by Mark Babych and Michael Trainor aims to collate and publish ‘The Complete History of Drinking in the Northern Quarter’ spanning 240 years from the industrial revolution to our modern day creative community through contributed stories.

We’ve kick started our support by contributing a beer mat design promoting the project, currently under a nice pint of gentleman’s bitter on a well worn bar table in the NQ somewhere, keep an eye out. Also, visit the Northern Quarter Stories website for how to get involved and contribute.

Plenty of stories are already online with more information about the NQ. We love the section on ‘Ten facts you may not know about Manchester’s Northern Quarter’, especially #7 ‘When Factory Records. opened their seminal ‘Dry Bar’ in 1989 the coat hooks were designed by the little know French Designer Phillipe Starck‘.

12-6pm, 21st March 2012
The Great Hall, Manchster Town Hall
Albert Square, Manchester M60 8AD

Following the success of the 2011 Design Symposium Design Initiative present the second Manchester Design Symposium, bringing the design world to the city with presentations from leading thinkers and practitioners focusing on the theme of The Value of Design.

This year’s event will explore the complex relationship between design and the economy, bringing to question whether the UK’s place at the top table of world design is under threat as emerging economies invest more in their ‘knowledge economy’ – and whether design and innovation has the potential to power the UK out of a recession.

Speakers include Adrian Shaughnessy (Unit Editions), Morag Myerscough (Studio Myerscough), Alex Bec (It’s Nice That), Jason Smith (Fontsmith), Vera-Maria Glahn (Field), Malcolm Garrett and David Kirkwood.

The GF Smith Heritage Exhibition, ’126 Years of Print,’ will also be on display showcasing the company’s impact and influence on the success of graphic design in the last century.

We are again proud to be part of the design team behind Manchester Design Symposium and excited Manchester will be home to another cracking design event.

Website is now live Manchester Design Symposium 2012
Tickets are now on sale! [here] go get em and we’ll see you there.

We like to think we are full of ideas, constantly researching and brainstorming for clients but how do you turn something really negative into something positive very quickly?

As our studio is in the heart of Manchester’s Northern Quarter we witnessed a lot of negativity over one evening but also an amazing outpouring of love for the city. Marketing Manchester alongside many other city partners have spearheaded the ‘I Love Mcr’ campaign over the last few weeks featuring print campaigns and events which has been a real success.

After a meeting this week with the great and good of Manchester we came up with a very simple idea to show our love for the city but also to spread that message further. With any good ideas you need even better people to implement them and without Fiona & Daisy from Down at The Social alongside Marketing Manchester this would not of happened.

So here is the plan:

To let off hundreds of biodegradable balloons from Exchange Square, from 4-6 but each carrying a personal message from the people of Manchester. The idea is for the balloons to be found and if brought back to a specified point, a prize will be awarded.

Simple idea and now we need everyone to get involved, please visit the designated stall between that time and show your love for our city.

I Love MCR facebook page
